Dr R. Y. Langham

Aug 01, 2022

Even though porn addiction doesn’t appear in the American Psychiatric Association’s DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Disorders), it’s still a prevalent issue that needs attention. To those who suffer, porn addiction is a very real and very serious behavioral addiction that consumes their lives.

Many porn addicts are too embarrassed or ashamed to ask for help, while others are in denial that they even have a problem. Regardless of where you find yourself in your struggle or recovery, knowing how to find help and support for your porn addiction is an important first step in reclaiming control of your life. There are plenty of resources available both in person and online, depending on your needs, comfort level, and availability.

In this article, we’ll offer an in-depth look at what resources are available and how to find them.

How to Find Help and Support for Your Porn Addiction

The first step in finding the help you need is asking for it. There are a few ways to go about this. The easiest and most convenient is to start a Google search. You can search for websites, online therapy courses, local support groups, or therapists in your area. Hotlines, porn addiction apps, and books are also useful resources.

If you’re currently working with a therapist, they can recommend additional tools including the ones mentioned above. Medical professionals and doctors may also refer you to sex addiction specialists or suggest you visit a particular website or online forum. For those addicts open to group therapy, you can check your local community for meeting times and locations.

Pornography Addicts Anonymous, Sex Addicts Anonymous, and Sex Recovery Anonymous are just a few viable options. Similar to Alcoholics Anonymous, these programs are free, and private, and provide detailed guidance on how to overcome your addiction including 12 steps that are easy to follow.

More intense porn addictions may require 24/7 help and support in the form of inpatient or residential treatment programs. Search online for a local facility in your area. If there isn’t one, you may need to travel. The good news is that, sometimes, physically removing yourself from the place where your porn addiction first started could help jump-start the recovery process. New environment, new you!

Porn Addiction Resources and Communities

Online resources and communities are the best options for many porn addicts thanks to their convenience and anonymity. If you’re not ready to tell the world about your addiction, you may want to start the recovery process in the privacy of your own home. These online resources and communities are a great place to start.

Reboot Nation

Reboot Nation is an online community focused on helping people recover from porn addiction and porn-induced sexual dysfunction. Here, you’ll find videos, group forums, articles, and other advice for living a life free of pornography.

As the name suggests, Reboot Nation helps addicts reboot their brains through education and encouragement. Participants are asked to take a complete rest from pornography, which the program also refers to as artificial sexual stimulation. Reboot Nation provides the tools necessary to start the recovery process immediately. Along the way, you’ll learn all the potential harm caused by internet porn, both to yourself and your loved ones.

What makes Reboot Nation unique is that the website is connected directly to the community’s YouTube channel. Here, you’ll find motivational and informative videos to support your recovery efforts. These videos provide a basic understanding of how even moderate porn use can spiral out of control and lead to both addiction and sexual dysfunction. Not only will you become more educated about your addiction, but you’ll receive actionable advice that works. Reboot Nation recommends porn addicts visit the YouTube channel first, before exploring the rest of the website.

Daily Strength

If you’re looking for the community feel of a support group with the convenience of an online structure, look no further than Daily Strength. This online sex and pornography addiction support group helps connect addicts facing similar struggles, while also providing a list of crisis resources for severe addicts who need additional intervention.

When you visit the Daily Strength website, you’ll be met with a list of support groups and issues to choose from including anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and many more. You can use the website’s search feature to look for a support group that meets your specific needs. When you enter “porn” in the search bar it generates several results including support groups for addiction recovery, families of sex addicts, and partners of porn addicts. Although it may take some digging, Daily Strength has plenty of forums and communities to help address your unique struggles. The “Relationships and Sexuality” group category is a good place to start. You can also click on the “Crisis Resources” tab at the top of the page for informational blog posts and articles.

NoFap

NoFap is its own community-based porn recovery website that allows addicts to join forums and find online support groups based on their needs. The website also has educational articles and apps for those looking to recover from porn addiction, porn overuse, or compulsive sexual behavior. The goal of NoFap is to help addicts heal from porn-induced sexual dysfunctions, improve relationships, and learn to live their best lives.

Unlike some of the other free resources on this list, users do need to pay for NoFap. Once you subscribe, you can join weekly meetings and even sign up for weekly accountability calls from a member of NoFap’s support team. Members also get access to NoFap’s weekly newsletter where you’ll receive recovery-related updates, trending news, and other helpful content to help you stick to your sexual health goals.

NoFap’s community forum offers interactive peer-to-peer support including reboot challenges (to reboot your brain), events, and friendly competitions to help inspire and motivate members using a game-like structure. The website is constantly adding new blog posts, videos, and podcasts to inform and inspire.

Members have plenty of opportunities to engage with one another and utilize the program’s many tools. Addicts can track their progress in NoFap’s online journal, ask questions of experts on porn addiction and sexual dysfunction, and even choose accountability partners to increase their chances for success. Accountability partners can also team up during NoFap’s challenges, incentivizing the process.

Reddit

In recent years, Reddit has become one of the most popular and useful online forums for just about everything including ways to find help and support for your porn addiction. With communities and forums including r/pornfree and r/PornAddiction, it’s never been easier to find and connect with other addicts facing similar challenges.

By searching “porn addiction” on Reddit, you can discover a list of helpful online support groups, websites, forums, and communities where you can safely share your biggest issues, hurdles, and fears. Just remember that not all subreddits are closely monitored or regulated so you may encounter less-than-friendly members or unprovoked advice. These Reddit forums should act as a supplement to your porn addiction recovery, not the anecdote.

Porn Addiction Hotlines

Even in a world saturated by Internet use, traditional hotlines are still a popular way to find help and support for your porn addiction. Hotlines are especially helpful if part of your recovery includes avoiding the Internet altogether. Some addicts find it too tempting to even launch the web browser on their computer without searching for porn. If this describes you, consider these porn addiction hotlines for support.

SAMHSA National Helpline

Whenever you google the word “addiction” the SAMHSA hotline is the first result. SAMHSA stands for Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. This confidential national phone service provides help to individuals and families facing either substance abuse or addiction issues, including addiction to porn and other sexual behaviors.

Anyone can call 1-800-662-HELP (4357) 24 hours a day for free. When you do, you’ll receive a confidential treatment referral as well as information about substance abuse, mental health disorders, prevention, and recovery. Help is available in both English and Spanish. Porn addicts can use this hotline to find information and local resources.

Sex Addicts Anonymous

Sex Addicts Anonymous (SAA) is a 24-hour hotline that provides information about the 12-step support group for sex addiction. This hotline can put you in contact with local agencies and community groups that host SAA meetings in your area.

SAA also offers retreats and events for porn and sex addicts nationwide. Simply call 1-800-477-8191 24 hours a day and get in contact with a local support group for porn addiction.

The Boys Town National Hotline

The Boys Town National Hotline at 1-800-448-3000 anonymously offers support, resources, and treatment referrals for sex and porn addictions. This particular hotline offers counseling services to not only addicts but also parenting advice for parents of teens.

Slightly different from other hotlines on this list, the Boys Town program is a school-based intervention strategy that focuses on building and repairing relationships, teaching skills, and managing behavior. If the behavior you’re trying to manage or need help with involves uncontrollable sexual urges or porn addiction, the Boys Town hotline can help.

Addictions Hotline

Another national hotline that provides direct access to trained, clinically supervised phone specialists 24 hours a day, 7 days a week is the Addictions Hotline. By calling 1-844-276-2777, you can receive help, advice, and resources for individuals and families dealing with a wide range of addictions, including sex and porn addiction.

Porn Addiction Groups

There is strength in numbers, which is one reason why finding help and support for your porn addiction should include some form of group therapy or a local support group. While this option isn’t right for everyone, there’s nothing quite like the sense of community provided by support groups to help you feel less isolated and alone.

There are countless porn addiction groups to choose from based on your location, needs, spiritual beliefs, and the severity of your addiction. Here are some of the largest and most well-known recovery groups that can provide the help and support you need.

Pure Desire

Pure Desire Ministries is a Christian organization designed to help with both addiction and codependency in men, women, and young adults. The primary focus is treating sex addiction, porn addiction, and other intimacy disorders. Over the course of 20 years, the founders of Pure Desire developed a strategy for sex and porn addiction based on Biblical and clinical studies. The techniques used in this program have been proven successful at helping addicts create positive, long-lasting change.

Pure Desire Ministries became an independent 501c3 in 2007 and since has expanded far beyond the church. Today, Pure Desire is an internationally known and recognized organization designed to help porn addicts recover and lead more fulfilling lives. Not only is Pure Desire available in the United States and Canada but also worldwide.

Users can choose between local, in-person meetings or online groups. The local meetings are led by volunteers, while the online groups are organized and moderated by a Certified Pure Desire Group Leader. You can choose between groups designed to address both addiction and betrayal. The latter is a popular option for family members of porn addicts. If you opt for the online option, you’ll get access to a 2-hour-long meeting once a week and 1 to 2 hours of weekly homework. It’s recommended clients commit to 10 months.

Local, volunteer-led support groups hosted by Pure Desire are free, however, the online group meetings require a paid subscription. Addicts will be charged $490 for the weekly meetings and another $60 for resources. The betrayal program is less expensive at just $290 plus resources.

Men’s Porn Addiction Group

Although porn addiction isn’t unheard of among women, it’s definitely more prevalent in men. The Men’s Porn Addiction Group is geared toward this demographic. Not all the groups on this website are dedicated to porn or sex addiction, but if you know where to look, you can find a community of welcoming, like-minded guys looking for advice, conversation, and acceptance.

This online forum is designed to bring porn addicts together so they can help and motivate each other on the path to recovery. A peer counselor or qualified therapist moderates the group and facilitates the conversation. In some cases, the moderator is a former pornography addict dedicated to helping other men overcome their habits.

In addition to online group meetings, the Men’s Porn Addiction Group also hosts adventure retreats, self-improvement courses, and individual coaching for a more personalized experience.

Celebrate Recovery

Celebrate Recovery is a traditional 12-step program toward recovery. Except it’s geared toward porn addiction instead of substance abuse. Similar to Pure Desire, Celebrate Recovery is a faith-based program founded in 1991. It was first launched at the Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California by John Baker and Rick Warren. To this day, Baker is responsible for most of the recovery content found on the Celebrate Recovery website including resource materials and the program’s curriculum. Although the program does have Christian affiliations and some aspects are presented from a Biblical standpoint, more than 70% of Celebrate Recovery’s members come from outside the church.

Since its inception, Celebrate Recovery has grown from just four groups to 14. As of this writing, nearly 30,000 people have entered and completed the program locally with many remaining in the church post-therapy to help serve others. Even if you’re not local to California, you can attend a Celebrate Recovery program at over 35,000 churches worldwide. Over 5 million porn and sex addicts have taken advantage of the services offered by this outreach ministry. The organization has extended to recovery houses, universities, rescue missions, and even prisons.

Keep in mind that this program is available in person only. Simply visit the website and use the “Find a Group” feature to local a Celebrate Recovery program in your local area.

Sexaholics Anonymous (SA)

Sex addiction and porn addiction are often closely related. If you’re struggling with both or even just porn addiction, Sexaholics Anonymous (SA) can help. Most people are familiar with or have at least heard of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). This program was founded in 1935 and since then, dozens of other 12-step programs have emerged, including Sexaholics Anonymous.

SA was founded in the 1970s by a man struggling with sex addiction. He took the basic foundation of AA’s 12-step program and designed his own version that catered to sex addicts. Today, porn addicts can also benefit from attending SA meetings and applying the 12-step program to their lives. Although SA has no religious affiliation, groups often refer to a Higher Power.

Sexaholics Anonymous is designed for both men and women to share their hopes, strengths, fears, and experiences. People of all ages, genders, and from all walks of life are welcome. The only requirement is that you dedicate yourself to becoming sexually sober and stop lusting. You may find other spin-off programs similar to SA that are related to porn addiction or betrayed spouses.

The main difference is that not all groups define sexual sobriety in the same way. While some promote or accept moderate use of porn and certain sexual fantasies and scenarios, SA and similar groups focus on completely removing sexual triggers and urges from the addict’s life. According to the handbook, SA’s mission is to have “no form of sex with self or with persons other than one’s spouse or partner”. For unmarried participants, sexual sobriety could mean freedom from sex of any kind. All participants share the same goal of progressive victory over lust.

SA hosts several conventions in locations including Washington, Georgia, and Canada. You can find and attend meetings in person, by phone, or via email. These services are completely free. SA is completely funded and supported by member contributions.

Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA)

Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) is a sex and porn addiction recovery program designed for both men and women suffering from an addiction or compulsion to engage in sex, avoid sex, or with other emotional attachment issues. Similar to Sexaholics Anonymous, SLAA uses a 12-step program and the twelve traditions from AA to help participants overcome these compulsions and addictive behaviors.

One of the main differences between SA and SLAA is how they define sexual sobriety (as previously mentioned). However, they both share the same goal of bringing people together to help deal with these compulsions. With no religious or secular affiliation, SLAA welcomes people of any gender identity or sexual orientation.

Porn Addiction Therapy Programs

Therapy is one of the most effective ways to face, treat, and overcome an addiction of all kinds. Therapy comes in various forms, too, including individual, group, and couples. Similar to support groups, you can choose an online or in-person therapy program that best suits your needs and schedule.

Here are some of the most successful porn addiction therapy groups to consider.

Stop Together

Stop Together is an online therapy program for those struggling with porn addiction or unhealthy porn habits. The innovative program is based on six milestones with user-friendly chapters that cater to different types of porn viewers. Whether your porn addiction is having a severely negative impact on your life or you’re just looking to cut down on your porn use, Stop Together can help.

The six milestones used in the program are:

  1. Understanding Your Addiction
  2. Preparing for Success
  3. Mindfulness and Your Vision
  4. Accepting Your Addiction
  5. Identifying and Overcoming Temptation
  6. Repetition and Recovery

For just $49.99 porn addicts receive lifetime access to this information and all other resources on the website.

At the conclusion of the program, addicts will learn to:

  • Regain sexual confidence
  • Improve relationships
  • Overcome isolation
  • Stop overspending on porn
  • Clear your mind
  • Get your life back

Through a mix of CBT and other methods, Stop Together helps porn addicts reduce their viewing, control unhelpful thoughts, regain sexual wellness, and thrive post-therapy to prevent relapse

Only You Forever

This online therapy treatment program is designed to help repair relationships destroyed by porn addiction. Sex and porn addiction impact relationships in various ways including feelings of distrust, lack of intimacy, financial troubles, and resentment. If you’re a porn addict trying to save their relationship, you should consider Only You Forever.

The website offers a variety of counseling opportunities including

  • Marriage counseling
  • Porn addiction counseling
  • Sex addiction counseling
  • Infidelity counseling
  • Betrayal counseling
  • Trauma counseling
  • Teen counseling

Only You Forever also photos a successful podcast offering advice, information, and resources for couples and addicts. A 60-minute session with a certified counselor costs $160 and a 90-minute session is $240.

Inpatient Recovery Programs

If you’ve researched how to find help and support for your porn addiction but no treatment option has worked, you may need to adopt a more intense approach. Inpatient recovery programs and rehabilitation centers can help porn addicts suffering from severe addiction as well as porn addicts also battling substance abuse. Here, you’ll receive the help you need to tackle both issues simultaneously.

Inpatient programs offer 24/7 support, counseling, and resources. Staff members include medical professionals, sex therapists, and certified counselors. Patients can attend support group meetings, and individual therapy sessions, and participate in scheduled activities and events that promote sexual sobriety, healing, and a higher quality of life. Search for inpatient treatment programs in your area or choose a destination location that gives you a change of pace and scenery.

Here’s a list of some of the most well-known sex and porn addiction rehabs in the country:

  • All Points North Lodge (Vail Valley, Colorado)
  • Whitesands Treatment Center (Fort Myers, Florida)
  • J. Flowers Health Institute (Houston, Texas)
  • Enlightened Solutions (Egg Harbor, NJ)
  • Apex Recovery (San Diego, California)
  • The Meadows (Wickenburg, Arizona)

There are also international options available, including:

  • The Dawn Rehab (Chiang Mai, Thailand)
  • NEOVIVA (Lake Lucerne, Switzerland)
  • Cedars at Cobble Hill (Cobble Hill, British Columbia, Canada)
  • Freeman House Recovery (Hartbeespoort, North West, South Africa)

The only downside to many inpatient programs is the cost with some facilities charging between $3,000 and $6,000 per week or more. But if your porn addiction is out of control or you’re finding yourself in financial debt because of your addiction, this price may be well worth it. You can use this website to explore more rehab options.
